Home page for Professor Jin-Peng Sun (Jinpeng Sun) and Professor Xiao Yu

The Jinpeng Sun-Xiao Yu joint laboratory was created by Professor Jin-peng Sun from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Professor Xiao Yu from the Department of Physiology at Shandong University, School of Medicine. The joint laboratory shares many resources, including molecular biology, biochemistry, crystallography, electro-physiology and animal models. The laboratory has a broad research interest, including membrane receptors, protein post-translational modifications and their functional relevance in physiological or pathological contexts.

The joint laboratory is located at the Baotu Spring campus of Shandong University, near the famous Baotu Spring. The scenery is beautiful, especially in the summer; and the history is long.

Professor Xiao Yu was admitted to the Special Class for the Gifted and Young (SCGY) at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1994 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree together with the excellent undergraduate class of Anhui Province in 1999. She then studied electro-physiology with Professor Zhuan Zhou (the student of Nobel Prize winner Erwin Neher) at the Institute of Neuroscience, CAS. Professor Xiao Yu completed her Ph.D. in 2004 and then worked as a research associate at the University of Stony Brook and Indiana University from 2004 to 2009. Professor Xiao Yu set up her own laboratory in 2009 at Shandong University. She has earned the 21st Century Excellent Scientist of Education award from the Department of China and was named an Excellent Young Scientist by Shandong Province. Professor Xiao Yu is also the principle investigator of the high school key laboratory of Shandong University entitled “Protein Science of degenerative diseases”. To date, Professor Xiao Yu has published more than 40 research papers in high impact journals, such as PNAS, Nature Communications, Cell Research, J.Biol.Chem, J. Neurosci, J. Physiol, Diabetes, JACS, AJPCP .

Professor Jinpeng Sun entered the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1993. In 1997, he began studying protein crystallography with Professor Li wen Niu and Professor Mai kun Teng. In 2001, Professor Yun Yu Shi (CAS member of China) recommended that hestudy protein tyrosine phosphatases with Professor Zhong yin Zhang at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM). Jin-peng earned his Ph.D. at AECOM in 2006 and continued his research under Professor Zhong-yin’s supervision until 2007. He then studied G protein coupled receptors at Duke University with Professor Robert J. Lefkowitz (HHMI, NAS member, 2012 Nobel Prize). After 4 years, Jin-peng came to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Shandong University to set up his own laboratory. To date, Professor Jin-peng Sun has published more than 40 research papers in journals such as J.Biol.Chem, PNAS, Cell Reseach, Nature Communications, Biochemistry, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Chemical Biology, and Angew Chem Int Ed Engl.

The joint laboratory is looking for highly motivated students or scientific researchers to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying important human diseases and to develop effective therapies to treat these diseases.
